(Letter from John Talbot 8.11.00] Oxford Chronicle - 31st Jan 1852 WALLINGFORD INQUESTS BEFORE J. H. COOKE, ESQ., CORONER. On Thursday, the 22nd inst., at Crowmarsh, on the body of Mr. Job Lovelock, of Wallingford, maltster, aged 60 years, who was found drowned that morning in a pond of water on the road side, in Bensington Lane. - WilliamButcher, gardener, living at Wallingford, on his oath, stated, - Last evening I called an my way home at the Castle Tap, in Benson, kept by James Atkins, where the deceased and another were drinking and smoking. Lovelock had a glass of gin and water; he left the inn at half-past 5 o'clock. When on his road home it appears he fell into the pond above referred to. On the following morning Mr. Eyre, solicitor, of Benson, was travelling in a carriage towards Wallingford, and saw the deceased in the pond, which only contained about 6 inches depth of water. Mr. Atkinson, apothecary, deposed that in his opinion the deceased came by his death from suffocation, by falling into the water, as he appears not to have st ruggled at all. The jury found an open verdict - Found drowned. |
