Post Office Directory 1869 LOVELOCK Charles, draper, Market Place LOVELOCK Frederick, Fox and Hounds Shirburn Street

Trader. In 1851 and 1861 census Frederick was Innkeeper of the Fox and Hounds PH next door to his brother George in Shirburn Street. Living with an Elizabeth Pilcher, bn abt 1795, Servant Housekeeper, born Ibstone, Buckinghamshire [appears in both 1861 and 1871 census]. In 1851 census Frederick was 'aged 34, unmarried, Victualler, employing 1 man' and in 1861 census 'aged 42, unmarried, Inn Keeper'. He was listed as 'occupier' in his fathers Will dated 1860. In 1871 it was run by Charles Lovelock aged 40 and Annie (aged 44) both born in Wallingford. [Resident with them in 1871 census were their children Mary, aged 12, born Watlington and Susanna, aged 10, born Nettlebed and a General Servant, Elizabeth Nutt, aged 47.] This is almost certainly his cousin Charles Gibbs Lovelock. In Oxfordshire Trade Directories for 1847 (Post Office Directory), 1850 (Slater's Directory], 1854 (Post Office Directory], History Gazetteer & Directory of Berks and Oxon (Ed Casey & Co) 1868 and 1869 (Post Office Directory) (but not 1863 Dutton, Allen & Co Directory of Oxon & Berks), Frederick is listed as Innkeeper/resident of the Fox & Hounds in Shirburn Street, Watlington. (Charles Lovelock appears as resident in 1876 Harrods Directory of Beds, Bucks, Berks & Oxon. No Lovelock entries 1887 Post Office Directory.) The pub is still there.

John Lovelock has checked the Victuallers Licencing Records 1801-1822 (all that have survived] but no mention of 'Fox and Hounds'. Nor it it mentioned in Commercial Directories 1830 or 1842. The Fox and Hounds is first mentioned in 1847 and the Licencee is Frederick Lovelock. Likely that he was the first Licencee until his death in 1869, followed by Charles Gibbs until the 1870s.

Beneficiary in his father's Will [1864]. Left 20 shares in Wycombe and Thame Railroad, now closed.

Left Will dated 18 Oct 1869 and proved 11 Dec 1869. Will states he died on 18th October 1869 and that he was an Innkeeper at the time of his death. He left a Legacy of 19 pounds to his housekeeper Elizabeth Nutt and 200 pounds to his cousin Charles (Gibbs) Lovelock, a Draper; to his friend George Francis Filbee of the parish of Shirburn, farmer, a legacy of five pounds for his trouble as one of executors of his Will. The residue of his estate was left to his brother Henry Lovelock, Yeoman, residing at Tetsworth, Oxfordshire and following his death any residue was divided equally between the children of sister Sarah Baylis and Elizabeth Gibbons and Louisa Lovelock and Charles Lovelock, the youngest children of his brother George. The Will was signed by Frederick on the day he died in the presence of Augustus Jones, Solicitor and J E Boyton, Surgeon, both of Watlington. Charles Lovelock and George Filbee appointed trustees and executors. Estate valued at under 2000 pounds.
